FEDERAL

PROJECTS

Alluvion is currently providing biological services to several federally funded infrastructure projects. We have provided preconstruction surveys, biological monitoring (including marine mammal monitoring), aquatic habitat characterization (using side scan sonar), and other environmental services to a wide array of clients.

San Francisco Bay Bridge Demolition Project

The demolition of the nearly two-mile long original East Span is underway. Crews have worked westward towards Yerba Buena Island, taking apart the cantilever section and demolishing the S-Curve, before moving east to dismantle the 504’ and the 288’ truss span. Caltrans has already completed implosions at Pier’s E3, E4 and E5. The implosions last only six seconds and pull the concrete debris from the destroyed pier down into its own buried cavities. A “bubble curtain” of compressed air encircles the implosion helps to contain the sound of the blast. Caltrans has secured the final permits necessary to demolish the largest pier of the old eastern span of the Bay Bridge using nearly 400 small explosives.

Alluvion is partnered with AECOM through 2020 to provide biological services including biological monitoring of construction, permit compliance, and mitigation.

  • Alluvion is contracted to conduct eelgrass studies in order to assess eelgrass distribution within the project area. The studies are conducted pre and post implosion in order to evaluate the extent of any immediate eelgrass impacts. Our biologists and ecologists search for implosion related impacts that might be related to intensive boat traffic, extensive water turbulence (from bubble curtain), possible shock wave, and debris disposal activities via clamshell dredging.
  • Alluvion also provides NMFS approved marine biologists and CDFW approved Avian Biologists to monitor marine mammal and shore bird behavior patterns associated with construction activities.
